Dead Animal Carcasses Found in Rivers 'Shameful'

Rural rivers in Northern Ireland are facing a disturbing problem: the repeated dumping of dead animal carcasses. Litter pickers are describing the situation as “shameful” and a “regular sight,” highlighting a growing concern for the health of local waterways and wildlife.
Paddy Little, a litter picking officer for a watersports club, has been working along the Blackwater River, which flows between counties Tyrone and Armagh. He reports encountering numerous carcasses, stating he has lost count of the number he has observed. The Blackwater River is a significant watercourse for the region, and the presence of dumped animals raises concerns about potential pollution and ecological damage.
Little's observations underscore a broader issue of illegal dumping in rural areas. While the specific reasons for the carcasses being dumped remain unclear, authorities are likely to investigate potential links to illegal animal disposal practices or accidental deaths that are not being reported properly. The watersports club and other local organizations are working to keep the rivers clean, but the ongoing problem requires increased awareness and enforcement to prevent further incidents. The impact of these dumped carcasses on the river’s ecosystem and water quality is currently being assessed.
